Jeremy Clarkson officially sacked

Well, it’s official. Clarkson’s been sacked. After a long investigation by Ken Macquarrie, the head of BBC Scotland, over a “fracas” involving Clarkson and fellow Top Gear producer, Oisin Tymon, the BBC has decided not to renew Jeremy Clarkson’s contract and he will no longer the the host of Top Gear.

New details have been released today of the fracas and it appears that while working on location at the Simonstone Hall Hotel, Clarkson and Tymon were engaged in a physical and verbal altercation in which Tymon was left bruised and with a bloodied lip. Apparently, the physical attack lasted 30 seconds before it was broken up.

It has been reported that the attacked was unprovoked by Tymon and he also did not retaliate. It is also said that Clarkson continued to verbally abuse Tymon long after the attack and threatened to sack him. There has been no report from Macquarrie as to why Clarkson attacked Tymon, but previous reports claim that the fracas was over Clarkson receiving cold cuts for dinner as opposed to steak.

Jeremy-Clarkson

While the report claims that the attack was unprovoked, it’s interesting that there has been no timeline or reasoning behind the attacks, so we won’t know why Clarkson attacked Tymon, or in what order things happened. I’m not so sure it was as cut and dry as “You brought me cold cuts instead of steak?” followed by a punch to the face. But as we don’t have any facts, there is no use in speculating.

It’s worth noting that Clarkson reported the incident himself and did not deny the attack. So credit where credit’s due, he owned up to the mistake and more importantly, admits it was a mistake. A recent article by Piers Morgan, who was Clarkson’s first assault victim, shed some light on what it is like to be in their line of work and also into what Clarkson is like in person. There’s no excuse for what Jeremy Clarkson did. Hitting fellow employee in the workplace is inexcusable. And as much as it pains me to see Top Gear end on such a poor note, the punishment is a fair one. However, after reading Morgan’s article and hearing that Clarkson reported this incident himself, it shows that we’re all human and are prone to making mistakes. Clarkson made a mistake, he’s owning up to it and he’s facing the consequences as he should.

No one knows, for sure, the future of Top Gear or Clarkson or even the other two hosts, James May and Richard Hammond. However, James May was recently interviewed by some reporters outside his home, in which he said that “Much as I think he’s a knob, I quite like working with Jeremy.” He also goes on to say that the three hosts work as a package, so it seems that Top Gear must move on from all three hosts.

All we know for sure, is that Clarkson struck Tymon, bloodied his lip, and has now been fired from the BBC and Top Gear. Hopefully we’ll see the three Brits in a new motoring program in the future. Maybe they can go to Netflix, where they’d have a larger budget, the ability to say whatever they want and we wouldn’t have to watch commercials. If that happens, this whole fracas would turn out to be a win for everyone. Well, everyone except Tymon.
